Canta U Populu Corsu
Created at the beginning of the Seventies, Canta U Populu Corsu is still appreciated today by the entire Corsican people along with anyone who ever saw them at the time of their international debuts. Canta is without a doubt one of the Corsican “seniors groups” and surely the most recognized by far.
This band was created by a group of young people loving music and Corsican traditional songs, originating from all the parts of the island. They had in common the wish to practice their songs as well as the belief in saving the cultural heritage and heart of Corsica. This association gave rise to a group whose vocation is to defend the disappearing true values of Corsicans. But their political commitment in 1983 lead to the deactivation of the group. The concerts were very numerous outside the island to show the Corsicans and the friends of Corsica outside the island a cultural image filled with emotions through the music and the voices which constitute Canta U Populu Corsu. And it worked, as after some very difficult years their musical style and their high quality voices have been recognized by a large number of specialists and are now appreciated well beyond the Corsican frontiers...
A lot of contemporary Corsican artists originated from Canta: some singers of the groups I Muvrini and I Chjami Aghjalesi, or some solo singers such as Petru Guelfucci or the talented Ghjuvan Paulu Poletti, who both were at the origin of the triumphal debuts of Canta.
